Smoke detectors are an important part of protecting any home or business. Make it a priority to maintain your smoke detectors on a regular basis so that while you are going about your daily routine they are ready to alert you to danger.

Every bedroom and sleeping area on every level of your home needs a smoke detector. Even the attic and basement.

Make sure that every unit is securely fastened to its surface, whether it is a wall or a ceiling.

When it comes to the workplace, ensure that they are installed in all areas where people spend time, from the bathroom to the warehouse.

Customer waiting areas and public restrooms need to be outfitted, as well.

Make sure you know how old your alarms are and test them monthly. Use the test button for this and make sure everyone in your home or business knows what they sound like so that reaction times will be quick in the event of a fire.

Keep them clean and free of greasy build-up and dust, which could affect their performance. You can use a hand-held vacuum for this task. Place this activity on your workplace cleaning schedule to ensure that it is completed on a regular basis.
Are they hard-wired or wireless? When is the last time you replaced the batteries?

Are your alarms interconnected? They should all go off at the same time in the event of a fire, so contact a professional to have this taken care of.

Replace all smoke detectors, including those that use 10-year batteries and hard-wired alarms before they turn 10 years old, or sooner if they don’t respond correctly when tested.

Save and follow manufacturer’s instructions for testing and maintenance of your units.

Your units should be marked by a certified inspection entity.
